West Hoe Pier is located on the Plymouth Hoe sea front next to the waterfront pub. It is a popular fishing location due to being easily accessible and comfortable to fish from.

The right hand side (looking out to sea) is the most popular side to fish from and usually more prolific due to being slightly deeper than the left side. The left hand side is also more snaggy compared to the right.

Common Species Caught Here

Mackerel, Garfish, Wrasse, Pollack, Blennies, Rockling, Dogfish, Pouting and Whiting.

Less Common Species You May Catch

Thornback Ray, Bass, Plaice, Red Mullet.

Top Baits

Mackerel will catch the majority of species you get around West Hoe so will be the best all round bait to use. Ragworm is also a top bait here and catches the fish that won't take mackerel baits.

Popular Tactics

You can catch fish using many different methods but the most popular are float fishing and bottom fishing. How far out you cast doesn't really matter as there are fish all around the pier as well as further out but some species such as Wrasse are more likely to be close in.
